Contact devices are simple, and therefore the most affordable. Their peculiarity lies in the need for mechanical action on the organs of vision (most often pressure), which makes it possible to reveal the elasticity of the cornea. Almost all contact devices are deprived of the possibility of taking into account its thickness. For this reason, they have a relatively large error rate. Moreover, contact devices require a disinfectant treatment of the working surface in order to exclude the transmission of infections.
A non-contact intraocular pressure tonometer, the price of which can also be in the lower range, is devoid of this drawback. The principle of operation is based on measuring the level of corneal deformation under the influence of a jet of compressed air. The procedure takes place very quickly, without pain or discomfort. Such equipment does not imply direct contact with the organs of vision, reducing the risk of infection to zero.
